Your hunt for the Holy Grail of VOX tone stops here. To mark over fifty years of VOX guitar amplifiers we have created the Heritage Collection of hand-wired amplifiers. Instead of just a typical reissue where a vintage amp is dusted off and imitated, this amplifier, like the others in the Heritage Collection, carries you through and through the halcyon years of VOX tone, blending the respected EF86 preamp channel of 1958 with the 1963 Top Boost channel altogether in one amplifier. Bring in a few New tone moulding control enhancements and the outcome is maybe the best VOX amplifier in the company's fifty year history.
The EF86: The charming VOX tone
What is it that establishes EF86 based VOX amplifiers some of the most collectible in the cosmos? Possibly it is the means the amp naturally overdrives, nearly breathing with a spirit unto its own. Active alterations in pick attack almost appear to be expected prior to you make them. Or perhaps it is the bare-assed power of the creamy distortion as you crank the amp the whole way upwards and thrash down upon a power chord. Whatever it is, there is an undeniable magic about this point of VOX amplification. An age when the merest of circuits developed a few of the most composite of tones. Today in short supply, the EF86 Pentode tube beats out the core of this subtle tone. 50 years afterwards, the magic comes back.
